ABC’s General Hospital is one soap that frequently undergoes casting shakeups. In 2023 alone, several characters were recast, brought back, or written off. The creators have repeatedly shown they won’t hesitate to write off a character who has outlived their purpose in the story.

Dex, portrayed by actor Evan Hofer, debuted on General Hospital in 2022 and has since been an integral part of the soap, especially after he and Michael made a deal to take down Sonny Corinthos. Michael planted Dex in Sonny’s inner circle to collect evidence to send him to prison for good.

Dex was introduced as Chet’s fellow vet and acted as Chet’s replacement with Sonny while delivering supplies to troops in the Middle East. However, Dex proved himself useful, and Sonny allowed him to stick around. The mob boss was particularly impressed when Dex stopped a fight at the gym, prompting Sonny to discuss his future.

Dex performed several shady tasks for Sonny. However, when Brick informed Sonny that Dex had been discharged from the Army for assaulting a senior officer, Sonny became suspicious. Dex explained that he had been abused and bullied by his older brothers and that the Army senior was similarly abusive. Sonny empathized but warned Dex to avoid overstepping or keeping secrets.

Meanwhile, Dex crossed paths with Josslyn several times. Their connection deepened after he saved Ava Jerome’s life at a charity picnic on the Quartermaine estate. Later, he helped Joss retrieve Avery’s bracelet from a dumpster, sparking a bond between them.

Dex became embroiled in the hook killer attacks, which made him a prime suspect. Although Sonny got him out of police custody, he conducted his own brutal interrogation, during which Dex endured a severe beating. Michael and Joss convinced Sonny to release him, and Dex refused to incriminate Sonny when questioned by Dante.

Despite this, Dex and Michael resumed their plan to take Sonny down. Michael warned Dex to stay away from Joss, but the two eventually began a secret relationship. Their romance became public after Joss ended things with Cameron.

Dex later recorded incriminating evidence against Sonny related to Pikeman. Michael and Dex believed they had what they needed to take Sonny down. However, Carly intervened, forcing them to destroy the evidence and abandon the mission. She rerouted Dex’s role to ensure Sonny’s safety, and Michael eventually gave up on the plan at Willow’s request.

Since then, Dex’s storyline has lacked significant developments. He and Joss saved Ava’s life again, but beyond that, he has had little to do. This has led fans to wonder if Dex’s time on General Hospital is nearing its end.

One unresolved mystery is Dex’s paternity. From his debut, his past has been shrouded in secrecy. Many fans speculate that Dex could be revealed as a long-lost Quartermaine, perhaps the son of AJ or Jason Morgan.

Here’s where it gets interesting: Steve Burton, who played Jason Morgan, is returning to General Hospital. If Dex stays on the show, this could be the perfect time to explore a potential connection to Jason.

As of now, neither Evan Hofer nor the production team has confirmed Dex’s departure. With potential storylines like his paternity and a connection to Jason, there may still be more for Dex on the soap.
